3-4 Clutch: Disassembly
- Remove the 3-4 clutch hub assembly.
- Remove the hub.
- Remove the bearing.
- Remove the oil seals from the 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.
- Remove the 3-4 clutch pack snap ring.
- Remove the 3-4 clutch pack.
- Remove the 3-4 clutch piston snap ring.
- Using the special tool, compress the clutch piston.
- Remove the snap ring.
- Remove the 3-4 clutch piston spring retainer assembly.
- Remove the spring retainer.
- Remove the springs.
- Remove the 3-4 clutch piston.
- Apply compressed air to the port to remove the piston.
- Remove the seals from the 3-4 clutch piston.
- Inspect the 3-4 clutch and input shaft assembly components for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
- Measure the thickness of the 3-4 clutch plate facings. A new clutch plate facing will be 1.6 mm (0.063 in) thick. If any of the facings are less than 1.4 mm (0.055 in) thick, replace all of the 3-4 clutch plate facings.
- Verify proper check ball operation.
- Apply compressed air to the check ball hole opposite the return spring side. No air should leak past the check ball. If air leaks past the check ball, install a new 3-4 clutch piston.
- Verify proper check ball operation.
- Apply compressed air to the check ball oil hole on the return spring side. Air should leak past the check ball. If no air leaks past the check ball, install a new 3-4 clutch piston.
- Install new oil seals on the 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.
- Check the seal side clearance. The clearance should be 0.08 mm (0.0031 in) to 0.23 mm (0.0091 in). If the clearance is above specification, install a new 3-4 clutch drum and input shaft.
NOTE:
Block off the opposite side of the indicated port.
NOTE:
The 3-4 clutch piston springs and spring retainer must be replaced as an assembly.
