Disassembly And Assembly Of Subassemblies: Differential: Disassembly
- Clamp the differential in a soft-jawed vise.
- If the final drive gear shows signs of excessive wear or damage, remove the final drive gear.
- Mark the final drive gear for installation.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the gear.
- Using the special tool, remove the differential bearing.
- Discard the bearing if damaged or worn.
- Remove the differential bearing.
- Discard the bearing if damaged or worn.
- Remove the speedometer drive gear.
- Remove the shaft lock pin out from the differential case.
- Remove the differential pinion shaft.
- Remove the differential gears.
- Remove the pinion gears.
- Remove the pinion gear thrust washers.
- Remove the side gears.
- Remove the side gear thrust washers.
- Inspect the differential components.
- Check the differential case.
- Check the side and pinion gears.
- Check the thrust washers.
- Ensure that the bearings rotate freely and are free of noise, pitting and cracks.
NOTE:
Do not remove the final drive gear unless it must be replaced.
NOTE:
Mark the final drive gear prior to removal to ensure that it is installed in the same position.
