Inspection & Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Electrical
    • Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
      • 2 (20A) (no communication with overhead console message center [MC], if equipped)
      • 3 (10A) (no communication with PCM)
      • 5 (10A) (no communication with vehicle dynamics module [VDM])
      • 7 (30A) (no communication with PCM)
      • 20 (15A) (no communication with PCM)
      • 106 (40A) (no communication with ABS module)
      • 109 (20A) (no communication with ABS module)
    • Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 2 (7.5A) (no communication with instrument cluster [IC], driver door module [DDM])
      • 5 (7.5A) (no communication with lighting control module [LCM])
      • 6 (7.5A) (no communication with LCM)
      • 8 (10A) (no communication with HVAC module)
      • 9 (7.5A) (no communication with MC, LCM)
      • 13 (10A) (no communication with ABS module, VDM, IC)
      • 15 (10A) (no communication with the HVAC module)
      • 16 (20A) (no power to scan tool)
      • 22 (10A) (no communication with restraints control module [RCM])
      • 24 (10A) (no communication with PCM)
      • 26 (10A) (no communication with IC, LCM)
      • 33 (10A) (no communication with fire suppression system module [FSSM])
    • Data link connector (DLC)
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  5. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the DLC.

If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:

    • Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
    • Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
    • Go to Pinpoint Test N , to diagnose No Power To The Scan Tool.
  6. NOTE: During the vehicle identification, the scan tool will first attempt to communicate with the PCM, after establishing communication with the PCM, the scan tool will then attempt to communicate with all other modules on the vehicle.
  7. After vehicle identification has been completed and vehicle selection has been confirmed, carry out the network test.
    • If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs and proceed to Step 6.
    • If the network test fails, go to Symptom Chart  to identify the module or network not communicating.
  8. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC Index . For all other DTCs, refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article.
  9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .
