SITUATION
With the Clubman doors closed, activate the brake lights and pay attention to the lower lights that are located in the rear bumper trim. Both light elements will be on. Then turn the directional on for either side and the inside brake light on the bumper switches off on that side. Refer to picture
AFFECTED VEHICLES
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Non-Compliance Recall on Model Year 2016 - 2017 MINI Clubman vehicles produced from Start-of-Production through March 23, 2017 involving the reprogramming of the control units for the brake lamps.
Approximately 16,883 vehicles are affected by this recall.
CAUSE
Software error in BDC (Body Domain Controller)
CORRECTION
Program and code the vehicle with ISTA/P 3.61.2.002 or ISTA 4.04.32 or higher to I-level F056-17-03-505 or a higher version.
Submit case for an IRAP coding which will bring I-Level to F056-17-03-506.
PROCEDURE
For vehicles that are sold and need to be delivered follow the procedure below:
- Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 3.61.2.002 or ISTA 4.04.32. This will bring the vehicle up to I-Level F056-17-03-505.
- After completion of the software update, submit a PuMA case titled "SI M63 02 17 IRAP"
- Connect to the IRAP Next client immediately upon submitting the PuMA case, do not wait to be told to connect
- The IRAP specialist will respond when completed. Once the IRAP session is completed the I-Level will be F056-17-03-506 (this I-level contains the fix needed to complete this campaign)
- SI M09 01 16 includes further information on IRAP Next usage and functionality
After programming is completed check the function of the brake lights in the bumper. Refer to picture. Only the outboard brake light will be on when the brakes are applied with the Clubman door closed. Only the outboard brake light will be on when either directional is turned on.
Note that ISTA/P and ISTA 4 will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a MINI approved battery charger/power supply (SI M04 10 09 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P or ISTA 4, refer to CenterNet/TIS/Technical Documentation/Diagnostics and Programming/Programming Documentation.
Q & A has been attached for further information.

Vehicle Programming and Coding
When ISTA/P automatically reprograms and codes all the vehicle's control modules that "currently do not have" the latest software and if one or more control module failures occur "during" this programming procedure:
- Please claim this "consequential" control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Other Repairs
Control module failures that occurred "prior" to performing this programming procedure:
- When "covered" under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations in KSD2/AIR.
TREAD Act - Previous Customer-Pay Repairs
This Recall repair addresses the vehicle's rear brake lights which are functioning, however they function in "non-compliant" manner due to a software error.
Since the issue is addressed by reprogramming BDC control unit with updated software, reimbursement requests for prior customer-pay repairs that specifically address the issue described in this Recall bulletin are not very likely.
