Engine Performance: System: Turbocharger: Overhaul: Reassembly

  1. Remove any carbon or fuel residues from inner surfaces of exhaust turbine and compressor housing. Blow dry and wipe off with a clean cloth. Install turbine cartridge assembly to exhaust turbine housing and position coupling band loosely.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage turbine blades during handling and assembly of turbine cartridge. Use extreme care in handling "O" ring. A damaged "O" ring will lead to oil leakage.
  2. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to both surfaces of "O" ring before it is installed to cartridge assembly grove. Install compressor cover using firm pressure to seat over "O" ring. With compressor cover inverted, install snap ring.
  3. Before installing turbocharger on engine, approximately position locations of exhaust turbine housing, turbine cartridge assembly (to locate oil return pipe), and compressor outlet for easy installation on engine.
  4. Install wastegate actuator assembly to compressor, but do not fully tighten mounting bolts. Install manifold pressure hose between compressor hosing and wastegate actuator diaphragm.
  5. Install loosely assembled turbocharger assembly on engine. Adjust location of exhaust turbine housing, turbine cartridge assembly, and compressor cover for proper alignment of catalytic converter, oil supply and return line, and other related parts.
  6. Before installing oil supply pipe be sure oil return hose is permanently installed to turbine cartridge assembly. Pour 1/2 pt. of clean engine oil in oil supply pipe fitting to lubricate turbine shaft bearings and prevent dry start-up bearing failure. Install oil supply pipe.
  7. Tighten wastegate actuator bolts and coupling band nut. Start engine and allow to fully warm up at idle. Check for oil, air, and exhaust leaks. Repair as necessary.
