Basic Idle Speed
NOTE:
ALWAYS check TPS adjustment after adjusting basic idle speed. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)
.
NOTE:
For Data Link Connector (DLC) location, see TESTS W/CODES
article in this section.
NOTE:
Ensure vehicle is at normal operating temperature with all lights, cooling fan and accessories off. Shift transmission into Neutral or Park position.
- Insert paper clip or appropriate probe into tachometer connector. See TACHOMETER CONNECTOR LOCATION table. Connect a primary voltage detecting type tachometer to paper clip. Run engine and read idle speed. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If idle speed is not within specification, loosen accelerator cable adjusting bracket. Turn ignition switch to ON position with engine not running, (KOEO). Leave ignition on for 15 seconds to allow Idle Air Control (IAC) motor plunger to fully retract.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect IAC motor connector. Loosen the Fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (FSAS). Start engine and adjust IAC adjusting screw to appropriate idle speed. See Fig 3
. Adjust FSAS until screw contacts throttle lever and then loosen 1/2 turn. Tighten lock nut. Connect IAC motor connector. Tighten accelerator cable adjusting bracket.TACHOMETER CONNECTOR LOCATION
