Circuit Tests: Notes

CAUTION: Ensure ignition is off when performing resistance tests. Perform all resistance and voltage tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedures.
NOTE: Engine Control Module (ECM) is used on vehicles with Manual Transaxle (M/T). Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is used on vehicles with Automatic Transaxle (A/T). ECM/PCM diagnostic memory is retained by direct power supply from battery. Memory is not erased by turning off ignition, but it will be erased if battery or ECM/PCM is disconnected. If ECM or PCM is replaced on vehicles with immobilizer system, immobilizer ECU and ignition key should be replaced with ECM/PCM.
NOTE: All scan tool functions required in test procedures are available on manufacturer's MUT-II scan tool. Generic scan tools may not have the capability to carry out all tests.
NOTE: For component locations, see appropriate illustration in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article.

Using scan tool, display and record DTCs. See ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If no DTCs are displayed, repair by symptom. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.

If DTCs are displayed, record DTCs and freeze frame data. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle according to drive cycles indicated by DTCs. See OBD-II DRIVE CYCLES under VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. For misfire or fuel trim DTC, also ensure vehicle operating conditions approximate freeze frame data. After drive cycle, check for DTC, provisional DTC, or completed readiness test. Method used will vary by DTC and scan tool. See VERIFYING REPAIRS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If DTC does not reset, no provisional DTC is present, or readiness test completed in one drive cycle, fault is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT DTCS  . If DTC returns, or provisional DTC is present, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . After identifying DTC, go to appropriate DTC test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . After repair, clear DTCs, perform appropriate drive cycle and check for DTCs or provisional DTCs.
