Section 249 (Disc): Overhaul: Caliper

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Nissan Murano. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the caliper from vehicle. For caliper assembly component location, see Figure and Figure .
  2. Remove the sliding pin bolts from the cylinder body, and remove the pad, shim, shim cover and pad retainer from the torque member.
  3. Remove the sliding pins and sliding pin boots from the torque member. Using a slotted screwdriver, remove the piston seal retaining ring (rear caliper only).
  4. Place a wooden block in front of piston and blow air from the union bolt mounting hole to remove the piston. Remove piston boot.
  5. Using a slotted screwdriver, remove the piston seal from the cylinder body. Be very careful not to damage the inner wall of the cylinder. Use new brake fluid to clean parts.
  6. CAUTION: The piston sliding surface is plated. Do not polish with sandpaper.
  7. Inspect the inner wall of the cylinder for corrosion, wear, and damage. If failure is detected, replace the cylinder body. Minor flaws caused by corrosion or a foreign material can be removed by polishing the surface with a fine sandpaper. Replace cylinder body if necessary.
  8. Check sliding pin and sliding pin boot for wear, damage, and cracks. Replace defective part if necessary.
  9. NOTE: DO NOT apply NISSAN rubber lubricant (KRE00 00010) to the piston seals.
  10. To assemble, apply NISSAN rubber lubricant (KRE12 00030) to the piston seals, and install them into the cylinder body. Never reuse piston seals.
  11. Apply brake fluid to the piston boots. Cover the piston end with the piston boot, and install the cylinder side lip on the piston boot properly into the groove on the cylinder body. Never reuse old piston boots.
  12. Coat the piston with brake fluid and press the piston into the cylinder body by hand to assemble the piston side lip on the piston boot properly into the groove on the piston. Press the piston evenly and change the pressing point to prevent the inner wall of the cylinder from being rubbed. See Fig 1. Fix piston boot with piston seal retaining ring (rear caliper only). DO NOT reuse retaining ring.
  13. Install the sliding pins and sliding pin boots to the torque member.
  14. NOTE: Before installing the torque member to the vehicle, wipe oil and grease from the washer seats on the knuckle spindle and mounting surface of the torque member.
  15. Install the torque member to the knuckle spindle and tighten the mounting bolts to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  16. Install the pad retainers to the torque member.
  17. After assembling the shims and shim covers to the pad, install it to the torque member.
  18. Install the cylinder body, and tighten the sliding pin bolt to the specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  19. CAUTION: Assemble the brake hose securely to the protrusions on the cylinder body. Do not reuse the copper washer for union bolts.
  20. Install the brake hose to the cylinder body and tighten the union bolts to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  21. After installing the caliper assembly, refill master cylinder with new brake fluid and bleed air from system.
