Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off. If MIL turns on and off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If MIL does not turn of and off, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in left front corner of engine compartment, inside air filter housing. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Brown/White wire) at PCM C2 harness connector. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  7.
  4. Connect DVOM between ground and terminal No. 5 (Brown/White wire) at PCM C2 harness connector. Monitor current reading for at least 2 minutes. If current reading remains 5-50 milliamps, go to step  12. If current reading does not remain 5-50 milliamps, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Ensure PCM is disconnected. Remove instrument panel cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Brown/White wire) at PCM C2 harness connector. If any voltage is indicated, go to next step. If no voltage is indicated, go to step  11.
  6. Repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire between PCM and instrument panel cluster. After repairs, go to step  16.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect CLUSTER fuse (10-amp) from instrument panel fuse block. See Figure. Instrument panel fuse block is located behind right side instrument panel endcap. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to step  9. If fuse is blown, go to next step.
  8. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between instrument panel cluster and instrument panel fuse block. Replace fuse. After repairs, go to step  16.
  9. Turn ignition off. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal A5 (Pink wire) at IPC harness connector. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  14.
  10. Check for an open or short to ground in Brown/White wire between terminal B8 at IPC harness connector and terminal No. 5 at PCM C2 harness connector. If any problems are found, repair wiring as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  11. Check for poor connections at IPC harness connector and PCM C2 harness connector. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connectors are okay, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
  12. Turn ignition off. Reconnect PCM connectors. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between terminal B8 (Brown/White wire) and terminal A5 (Pink wire) at IPC harness connector. See Figure. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off. If test light turns on and off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If test light does not turn on and off, go to next step.
  13. Check for poor connection at terminal No. 5 (Brown/White wire) at PCM C2 harness connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connector is okay, go to step  15.
  14. Repair open in Pink wire between terminal A5 at IPC harness connector and CLUSTER fuse in instrument panel fuse block. After repairs, go to step  16.
  15. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to step  16.
  16. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC as specified in code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  17. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, test is complete. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
