Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

  1. Ensure battery is correct battery for vehicle. Ensure battery is fully charged and in good working condition. Replace battery as necessary. If battery is okay, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool, if not already connected. Turn ignition on. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with each module that is on the class 2 serial data circuit. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules, diagnose communication problem. See TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Using scan tool, select display DTCs function for each module on the class 2 serial data circuit. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTCs, repair charging system by symptom. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  5. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", diagnose communication problem. See TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1000 or B1013, repair as necessary. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000 or B1013, repair other DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
