Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Perform battery test and inspection. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION . If battery passed test, go to next step. If battery did not pass test, replace battery.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, diagnose communication system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULE article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
  4. Access the Ignition Switch parameter in the Body Control Module (BCM) inputs data display list. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the ignition switch power mode parameter. The ignition switch parameter reading should match the ignition switch position for all switch positions. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, see Power Mode Mismatch under appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULE article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to communicate with each of the following modules on the class 2 serial data circuit:
    • Body Control Module (BCM).
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
    • Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
If scan tool communicates with modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with modules, diagnose communication system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULE article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  6. Select DISPLAY DTCS function for each module on scan tool. Record all DTCs displayed, DTC status and module which set DTC. If scan tool displayed DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTCs, diagnose charging system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  7. If scan tool does not display DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs that begin with "U", diagnose communication system. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULE article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  8. If scan tool displays DTCs that begin with "B", see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULE article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display DTCs that begin with "B", perform appropriate test in accordance with DTCs retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  table.
