Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove steering wheel and combination switch. Remove dust boot and cover from joint assembly. Remove snap ring and components from steering wheel end of shaft. See Figure.
  2. Using ignition key, unlock steering wheel. By lightly tapping steering shaft with soft mallet, remove shaft from column. If steering lock is to be removed, cut a slot in retaining screws with hacksaw. Using a screwdriver, remove screws.
  3. Remove steering lock. If column brackets are to be removed, cut a slot in retaining bolt with hacksaw. Using a screwdriver, remove bolts.
