Panel Dimmer Open

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. Unless instructed otherwise in test step, reconnect any disconnected connectors.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Instrument cluster connector is a 26-pin Black connector, located behind left upper instrument panel. Go to next step.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6, panel lights dimmer signal circuit (Red wire). See Figure. Observe ohmmeter display while rotating dimmer switch from low to high. If resistance increases smoothly from zero ohms to about 3500 ohms, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - NEON article. If resistance does not increase as specified, leave instrument cluster connector disconnected and go to next step.
  3. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. Multifunction switch connector is located under upper steering column shroud. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of panel lights dimmer signal circuit (Red wire) between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6 and multifunction switch connector terminal No. 8. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, reconnect multifunction switch connector, leave instrument cluster connector disconnected and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open Red wire.
  4. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6, panel lights dimmer signal circuit (Red wire). Observe ohmmeter display while rotating dimmer switch from low to high. If resistance increases smoothly from zero ohms to about 3500 ohms, test is complete. If resistance does not increase as specified, replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - NEON article.
