DTC P1281: Engine Is Cold Too Long

NOTE: Engine coolant temperature is monitored with ignition on and engine running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if engine coolant temperature does not reach 176°F (80°C) after vehicle has been driven for 20 minutes. Possible causes are: defective thermostat or engine cooling system.
  1. Ensure coolant is at proper level. Start engine and allow to run 10-15 minutes. Using scan tool, read ENG COOLANT TMP DEG while engine warms.
  2. If engine coolant temperature increase is smooth and is at least 176°F (80°C), test is complete. If engine coolant temperature is not as specified, check thermostat and cooling system for probable causes.
