Anti-Lock Brake System Diagnostic System Check
NOTE:
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may also be referred to as Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).
NOTE:
The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module on class 2 serial data circuit is not communicating.
The anti-lock brake system diagnostic system check is an organized approach to identify problems associated with Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). This check must be the starting point for any EBCM complaint, and will point to next logical step in diagnosing the complaint. The EBCM is a very reliable component and is not likely the cause of the malfunction. Most system complaints are linked to faulty wiring, connectors, and occasionally to components. Understanding the ABS system and using tables correctly will reduce diagnostic time and prevent unnecessary parts replacement.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Body Control Module (BCM), EBCM, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all modules, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCS function and retrieve any BCM, EBCM, IPC and PCM DTCs. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair ABS by symptom. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
- If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, B1007 or B1440, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, B1007 or B1440, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
- If scan tool displays DTC B1327, B1238, B1507 or B1508, repair engine electrical concern. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool displays any other DTCs, perform appropriate repair. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
