Automatic Transmission Powertrain On Board Diagnostic System Check: Testing
NOTE:
Check for applicable service bulletins before proceeding with this test. Perform this test only if there is a driveability complaint or if directed to this table from another article. Do not turn ignition switch OFF when performing this procedure. Do not clear the DTCs unless instructed by this procedure.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated, go to next step. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is not illuminated, repair MIL as necessary. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - AZTEK article.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Using scan tool, CAPTURE INFO function retrieve and record any DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are retrieved, repair automatic transmission concern by symptom. See article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
