Powertrain Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding. DO NOT perform the following procedure if driveability conditions are not present. DO NOT turn ignition off during the following procedure or clear DTCs unless instructed to do so.
  1. If engine does not crank, see appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. Ensure battery is fully charged and cables are clean and tight. Ensure PCM grounds are clean, tight, and in proper location. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with PCM. If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, perform SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  3. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to appropriate NO-START diagnosis in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  4. Using scan tool, select DTC display function for PCM, VTD, IP Cluster and EBCM. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, go to step  9.
  5. Using scan tool, save or capture powertrain DTC information or store information. After saving DTC information, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with a "U", go to appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. If no "U" series DTC are displayed, go to next step.
  7. If DTC P0601 or P0602 is set, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If DTC P0601 or P0602 is not set, go to next step.
  8. If scan tool displays DTC P0560 or P0620 diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If DTC P0560 or P0620 is not set, go to next step.
  9. If problem is related to an automatic transmission problem, diagnose transmission. If problem is not related to the automatic transmission, go to next step.
  10. If problem is with I/M testing, verify if vehicle meets the criteria that complies with local area requirements. Repair as necessary. If problem is other than I/M testing, go to next step.
  11. Check for cause of hard start, surges/chuggles, lack of power, sluggishness, or sponginess. Check for cause of detonation/spark knock, hesitation, sag, stumble, cuts out/misses, poor fuel economy, poor fuel fill quality, rough, unstable, or incorrect idle and stalling. Check for cause of dieseling/run-on, backfire, MIL inoperative, or MIL is always on. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, problem is intermittent.
