Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, and 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If replacing the VCIM, record the 10-digit STID number, and the 11-digit ESN number from the labels on the new module.
  2. Install the module on the bracket.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
  3. Install the retaining nuts (2).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the nuts to 1.6 N.m (14 lb in).

  4. Connect the coaxial cable (3) to the module.
  5. Connect the wire connectors (2) to the module.
  6. Install the I/P trim panel. Refer to TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT-INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER .
    IMPORTANT: After replacing the vehicle communication interface module, you must reconfigure the Onstar® system. Failure to reconfigure the system will result in an additional customer visit for repair. In addition, pressing and holding the white dot button on the keypad will NOT resets this version of the Onstar® system. This action will cause a DTC to set.
  7. Install the scan tool. Use the special functions menu in order to perform the Onstar® setup procedure for this vehicle.

  8. Move the vehicle to an open area that is away from tall buildings and with a clear view of unobstructed sky. Allow the vehicle to run for 10 minutes.
  9. Use the ID information menu on the scan tool to access the new station ID (STID) and the electronic serial number (ESN) from the new VCIM.
  10. Press the blue Onstar® button to connect to the Onstar® Call Center and perform the following procedure:
    1. Tell the advisor that this vehicle has received a new VCIM.
    2. Ask the advisor to add the new STID and the ESN to update the customer's account.
    3. Follow any additional instructions from the Onstar® advisor.
    4. Ask the advisor to activate the Onstar® Personal Calling feature, if available.
  11. The default language for voice recognition in the generation 5 Onstar® module in English. To change the language resident in the module, refer to SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM (SPS) .
