Removal & Installation

WARNING:
Do not strike or jolt SDM. Before applying power to SDM, remove any dirt, grease, etc. from mounting surface. Position SDM horizontally on mounting surface. Point arrow on SDM toward front of vehicle. Tighten all SDM fasteners and SDM bracket fasteners to specified torque value. Failure to follow correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury or unnecessary SIR system repairs.
WARNING:
If water enters vehicle and soaks carpet where SDM is mounted, SDM and harness connector must be replaced.
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
- Move driver and passenger front seats forward and/or rearward to gain access to console fasteners.
- Remove center instrument panel trim plate. See TRIM PANELS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in INSTRUMENT PANELS - AURORA article.
- Engage parking brake. Block vehicle wheels. Place protective tape between console vinyl trim and console trim plate. Remove shift knob by pulling straight up (there are no retainers). Remove console trim plate screws (1). Carefully insert a plastic trim tool between rear edge of console trim plate (2) and closed cup holder door. See Fig 1. Insert plastic trim tool far enough to ensure it is behind plastic substrate of trim plate and pry upward to disengage two rear retainer clips. To disengage remaining retainer clips:
- Use one hand to carefully push driver side of console away from trim plate.
- Use other hand to grasp driver side of trim plate through chrome ring.
- Gently pull up driver side of trim plate just far enough to disengage retainer clips.
- Repeat steps A-C for passenger side of trim.
- Grasp top and bottom of chrome ring on console trim plate with both hands and gently pull trim plate assembly rearward until two upper attaching brackets are clear of radio.
- Tip trim plate up and pull trim rearward until it is clear of instrument panel
NOTE: Avoid contact with console vinyl trim. - Remove console tray assembly-to-IP fasteners. Remove console tray assembly by pulling rearward. Disconnect harness connector from cigar lighter. See Fig 2.
- Pull out at rear of driver and passenger side console trim panels to disengage clips. Remove panels by sliding rearward.
- Disconnect shifter cable. Disconnect park/shift lock cable. See Fig 3.
- Disconnect main console harness connector. Open glove compartment to gain access to passenger side console fastener (1). See Fig 4.
- Remove fasteners (1 and 2) from driver and passenger sides of console. See Fig 5.
- Remove console-to-floor fasteners (1). Move front seats to full forward position. Remove console-to-floor fasteners (2). Move front seats to full rearward position. Slide console rearward and up to remove from vehicle. See Fig 6.
- Carpet will be pre-slit to provide access to SDM. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) (1) from SDM harness connector (2). Push down flex lock button (3) and move sliding connector locking cover (4) to open position. See Fig 7.
- Remove push-on clip (1) securing SDM wiring harness to console stud. Disconnect SDM harness connector (3) from SDM (2). See Fig 8.
- Remove SDM mounting fasteners (1) and remove SDM (2) from console floor (3). See Fig 9.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten SDM mounting fasteners to 80 INCH Lbs. (9 N.m). Tighten console-to-floor and console-to-IP, except (2), fasteners to 80 INCH Lbs. (9 N.m). Tighten console-to-IP fastener (2) to 18 INCH Lbs. (2 N.m). See Fig 5. Tighten console-to-IP fastener to 18 INCH Lbs. (2 N.m). See Fig 4. Tighten console tray assembly-to-IP fasteners to 12 INCH Lbs. (1.4 N.m). Tighten console trim plate retaining screws to 18 INCH Lbs. (2 N.m).
NOTE:
Important DO NOT allow sharp edges of trim to come in contact with soft vinyl trim on console.
