10 Minute Learn Procedure

NOTE: This procedure requires using Tech 2 scan tool, in conjunction with a Techline terminal containing current service programming system software.

Use this procedure after replacing following components:

When replacing theft deterrent control module with an GM SPO replacement part, module will learn keys immediately. Existing PCM must learn new fuel continue password when you replace theft deterrent control module.

When replacing PCM with a GM SPO replacement part, new PCM will learn incoming fuel continue password immediately after programming and upon receipt of a password message. Once password message is received and password is learned, perform learn procedure to change this password again. A PCM which had been installed in another vehicle will have learned fuel continue password of other vehicle's theft deterrent control module. Perform either 10-minute relearn procedure or relearn procedure after programming to learn fuel continue password of current vehicle's theft deterrent control modules.

When performing either relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from theft deterrent control module's memory.

Additional keys may be learned immediately after first relearn procedure by inserting additional key and turning ignition switch to RUN position within 10 seconds of removing previously learned ignition key.

Use a master key only when performing first relearn procedure. If valet key is used first, theft deterrent control module will not allow additional keys to be learned.

  1. Connect Tech 2 to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned Off on vehicle.
  4. Using Tech 2, select REQUEST INFORMATION FROM SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM and follow on-screen instructions.
  5. Disconnect Tech 2 from vehicle and connect it to Techline terminal.
  6. From Techline terminal, select SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM and follow on-screen instructions.
  7. Disconnect Tech 2 from Techline terminal and connect it to vehicle.
  8. Using a master Passkey III key, turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  9. Using Tech 2, select program ECU under SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM.
  10. NOTE: On some vehicles SECURITY indicator maybe illuminated on steady for duration of 10-minute relearn procedure.
  11. At this point Tech 2 must remain connected for duration of 10-minute relearn procedure.
  12. Observe scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes scan tool will display "PROGRAMMING SUCCESSFUL, TURN OFF IGNITION". Vehicle is now ready to relearn key information and/or passwords on next ignition switch transition from OFF to RUN.
  13. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, and wait 5 seconds.
  14. With a master Passkey III key, start vehicle. Theft deterrent control module has now learned key transponder information and PCM has now learned fuel continue password.
  15. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, and wait 15 seconds.
  16. With a second master passkey III key, start vehicle. Theft deterrent control module has now learned second master Passkey III key transponder information.
  17. Using Tech 2, scan tool, clear any DTCs.
