Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System Sensing & Diagnostic Module: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and 2001 Chevrolet Impala. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Be careful when you handle a inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). DO NOT strike or jolt SDM. Before applying power to SDM: Remove any dirt, grease, etc. from mounting surface Position SDM horizontally on mounting surface Point arrow on SDM toward front of vehicle Tighten all of SDM fasteners and SDM bracket fasteners to specified torque value. Failure to follow correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.
CAUTION: If any water enters vehicle's interior up to level of carpet or higher and soaks carpet, SDM and SDM harness connector may need to be replaced. SDM could be activated when powered, which could cause deployment of air bag(s) and result in personal injury. Before attempting these procedures, SIR system must be disabled. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. With ignition OFF, inspect SDM mounting area, including carpet. If any significant soaking or evidence of significant soaking is detected, you must perform following tasks: Remove all water. Repair water damage. Replace SDM harness connector. Replace SDM. Failure to follow these tasks could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.
