Anti-Lock Brake System Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and 2001 Chevrolet Impala. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When using scan tool for diagnostics, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)/Enhanced Traction System (ETS) system is disabled by Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). ANTI-LOCK indicator will illuminate indicating only normal power assist braking is available. After diagnostics have been completed, disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC) and turn ignition off for a least 10 seconds before road testing. This procedure is done to reset EBCM.
NOTE: Use this check as starting point for any anti-lock brake system complaint.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST D: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with BCM, EBCM, IPC and PCM. If scan tool communicates with all control modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with all control modules, go to TEST C: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Select DTCs function on scan tool for BCM, EBCM, IPC or PCM. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, diagnose by symptom. See SYSTEM TESTS .
  4. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTCs U1000-U1305 are not present, go to next step. If DTCs U1000-U1305 are present, go to TEST C: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. Check for DTC B1000 or B1013. If scan tool displays DTC B1000 or B1013, diagnose affected DTCs. Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . Repair as necessary. If DTC B1000 or B1013 is not displayed, go to next step.
  6. Check for DTC P0560 or P0620. If scan tool displays DTC P0560 or P0620, diagnose affected DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If DTC P0560 or P0620 is not displayed, diagnose affected DTC(s) displayed.
