Onboard Programming

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express, 2001 GMC Savana Special, 2001 GMC Savana Camper Special, and 2001 GMC Savana.   1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
  2. Connect Tech 2 scan tool to DLC.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  4. Turn off all vehicle accessories.
  5. Select SERVICE PROGRAMMING on scan tool.
  6. Identify vehicle information as requested.
  7. Select type of module to be programmed.
  8. Select type of programming to be performed.
  9. Verify displayed VIN with vehicle VIN.
  10. When complete, exit SERVICE PROGRAMMING.
  11. Turn off Tech 2 and disconnect from DLC.
  12. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
  13. Connect Tech 2 to Techline terminal.
  14. Select SERVICE PROGRAMMING.
  15. Select Tech 2 as the tool you are using.
  16. Select type of programming to be performed.
  17. Verify displayed VIN with vehicle VIN.
  18. Select type of module to be programmed.
  19. Identify type of programming:

    • Normal

      This type of programming is for updating an existing calibration or programming a new controller.
    • Vehicle Configuration Index (VCI)

      This selection is used if the vehicle VIN is unavailable or not recognized by the Techline(R) terminal. Observe, you will need to contact the Techline(R) Customer Support center to use this option.
    • Reconfigure

      This is to reconfigure a vehicle, such as tire size and axle ratio changes.
  20. Select appropriate calibration file.
  21. Ensure all connections are secure.
  22. Select REPROG to initiate download of new calibration to Tech 2.
  23. After download is complete, turn off Tech 2.
  24. Disconnect Tech 2 from Techline(R) terminal.
  25. Connect Tech 2 to DLC.
  26. Turn Tech 2 ON.
  27. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  28. Select SERVICE PROGRAMMING.
  29. NOTE: DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all PCM and DLC connections are secure and Techline(R) operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace control module.
  30. Select PROGRAM.
  31. After download is complete, exit SERVICE PROGRAMMING.
  32. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds.
  33. Turn off Tech 2.
  34. If a control module is replaced the following service procedures must be performed:
    • CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - CHEVY EXPRESS & SAVANA article.
    • Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Complete System Set Procedure. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
    • Programming Theft Deterrent System Components. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS - CHEVY EXPRESS & SAVANA article.
