Sir Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express, 2001 GMC Savana Special, 2001 GMC Savana Camper Special, and 2001 GMC Savana. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTION: If any water enters vehicle's interior up to the level of the carpet or higher and soaks the carpet, Sensing And Diagnostic Module (SDM) and SDM harness connector may need to be replaced. SDM could be activated when powered, which could cause deployment of air bag(s) and result in personal injury. Before attempting these procedures, SIR system must be disabled. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  1. Note AIR BAG indicator while turning ignition switch to RUN position. If AIR BAG indicator flashes 7 times, go to next step. If AIR BAG indicator does not flash 7 times, diagnose SIR by symptom. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). If scan tool communicates with SDM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with SDM, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Select DISPLAY DTCs function for Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). If scan tool displays any current or history DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTCs, system is okay at this time.
  5. If scan tool displays any DTCs, see BODY CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  table.
