Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Is DTC P1656 or P1349 present? If yes, go to DTC P1656: INTAKE CAMSHAFT POSITION ACTUATOR SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT  or DTC P1349: INTAKE CMP SYSTEM PERFORMANCE . If no, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Command CMP actuator solenoid ON using scan tool. Does engine idle very rough or stall when CMP actuator solenoid is commanded ON? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove CMP actuator solenoid. Connect CMP actuator solenoid to battery voltage and to ground with a pair of fused jumper wires. Observe movement of solenoid plunger when voltage is applied and released. Does solenoid plunger extend to at least 0.125" (3 mm) when voltage is applied and then retract when voltage is removed? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6.
  5. Check the engine for the following engine mechanical concerns:
    • A damaged or misaligned CMP sensor reluctor.
    • A worn timing chain and jumped timing.
    • A damaged CMP sensor reluctor wheel.
    • An incorrectly installed or incorrectly timed camshaft.
    • Low oil pressure or oil supply to CMP actuator assembly or actuator solenoid.
Repair as necessary. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Replace CMP actuator solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  8.
  7. Replace PCM. After repair, go to step  8.
  8. Use scan tool clear DTCs. Turn ignition OFF for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  as specified in supporting text. Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  9. With a scan tool, observe stored information, CAPTURE INFO. Does scan tool display any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
