Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Disconnect CMP actuator solenoid valve. Measure resistance of solenoid using a DMM. Is resistance 6.9-7.9 ohms at 68°F (20°C)? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  3. Connect CMP solenoid valve. Start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Command CMP actuator solenoid ON using scan tool. Does engine idle very rough or stall when CMP actuator solenoid is commanded ON? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  4. Remove CMP actuator solenoid valve. Connect CMP actuator solenoid to battery voltage and ground with fused jumper wires. Observe movement of solenoid plunger when power is applied and released. Does solenoid plunger extend to at least 0.125" (3 mm) when voltage is applied and then retract when voltage is removed? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  5. Remove CMP actuator solenoid oil filter. Check oil filter for restrictions or blockage. Is CMP actuator solenoid oil filter restricted or blocked? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  10.
  6. Check engine for correct engine valve timing. Check CMP actuator oil passages for blockage or restrictions. Repair as necessary. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  7. Install CMP actuator solenoid valve. Connect CMP actuator solenoid. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Backprobe between CMP actuator solenoid circuits with a DMM. Start engine. Observe DC voltage on DMM while operating CMP solenoid with scan tool. Was voltage 0.7-1.0 volt with solenoid OFF, and 8.0-10.0 volts with solenoid ON? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  8. Check CMP actuator solenoid valve electrical circuit for high resistance in circuit wiring or connections. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  12.
  9. Clean or replace CMP actuator solenoid filter. Install CMP actuator solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  13.
  10. Replace CMP actuator solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  13.
  11. Replace CMP actuator assembly. After repair, go to step  13.
  12. Replace PCM. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Turn ignition OFF for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  as specified. Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  14. Using scan tool, observe stored information, CAPTURE INFO. Does scan tool display any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
