Installing The Steering Column

STEERING COLUMN INSTALLING PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS (1 OF 3)

No. Procedure Instructions
1 Fit the new lower steering shaft on the steering gear.
This process is only necessary when replacing the steering column!
  • The lower steering shaft must be replaced completely when replacing the steering column, as the sliding piece and the toothing are paired with each other on the steering shaft for reasons of tolerance.
  • Replace fit bolt from the steering shaft whenever it has been removed. Screw threads must be clean and free of grease when fitting.
  • Tightening torque = 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)!
Fit the steering shaft onto the steering gear. Make sure the joint/intermediate pinion shaft overlap!
2 Insert the steering column.
V1 = variant for vehicles without PSM
 
V2 = variant for vehicles with PSM
Insert complete steering column into vehicle. -2-3- (1)
When fitting the steering shaft on the sliding piece, the notch (on the sliding piece) -2-3- (1)
3 Mount the steering column from above Fit the screw -arrow-holder-arrow-
4 Mount the steering column from below Mount the steering column -V-arrow-arrow-suitable tool- (1)
  • If the lock nut is -arrow- tightened too tightly, the brake pedal could be difficult to press and could stick. Make sure the brake pedal works easily!
  Install the clutch pedal for manual transmission vehicles and the clutch boost spring Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE CLUTCH PEDAL .
5 Connect the electrical lines (connector) with the steering angle sensor Plug in the connector on the steering angle sensor -C-arrow-B- see (1)

6 Put the steering lock in ignition key position 1 in the steering column (engage). See (1) Put the steering lock in ignition key position 1 in the steering column. The spring-loaded pin must engage! See (1)
7 Fasten the steering lock Mount the fastening screw from the steering lock -arrow- see (1)
7a On Tiptronic vehicles, fit (engage) the keylock cable on the steering lock, in the steering lock position 1 and select position D. See (1) Mount the keylock cable -5-
  • Move the gear-shift lever (selector lever) into position D and ignition lock to position -1-. See (1)
  • Then, line up the pusher on the keylock cable with the steering lock and insert (press in) in this position until the connection nipple engages on the steering lock housing.
7b Check the keylock function (Tiptronic vehicles) In selector lever position D, turn ignition key counter-clockwise. It must not be possible to reach the pull-out position. See (1)
 
Then release key again and move selector lever to position P. In this position, it must be possible to remove the ignition key and the selector lever button must be locked. See (1)
  • Make sure the steering lock cannot be turned to position 0 until the slider of the keylock cable is correctly mounted on the ignition lock! See (1) .
  • Then check if the keylock cable -5- is correctly positioned on the adjustment device -3- of the selector console -6-! See (1) . Replace the mounting specification for the steering lock. Refer to REPLACING STEERING LOCK  . Replacing the steering lock.
8 Mount the holder on the steering lock and check the steering lock operation (locking pin function) Mount the holder on the steering lock -arrow- see (1)
9 Installing left side nozzle and main light switch Plug in the electrical plug connection -1-2-3-4-3-5- see (1)

10 Install the steering-column cover and steering column switch Insert (clip in) the steering column cover -C-A and B-dimension X-X- see (1)
11 Install steering column trim and airbag contact unit Install steering column trim -arrows-A- see (1)
12 Attach the connector on instrument cluster (instrument mount) Attach the connector -arrows- see (1)
13 Install the instrument cluster (instrument mount) Install the instrument cluster (instrument mount) and secure with 2 Torx screws. Make sure that the leather from the instrument panel will not be damaged! -arrows-left arrow- see (1)
Install the hazard warning light switch and the plugs -arrows-left arrow- see (1)
14 Fit the steering wheel When straightening the wheels or after removing the identification move the steering wheel so that it is in the straight-ahead position. -arrow- see (1)
Do not crimp the cable for the contact unit! -arrow-. See (1) .
Install the hexagon nut with a spring washer -arrow-. see (1) .
  Installing the airbag unit Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVER'S AIRBAG UNIT
Refer to SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR VEHICLES WITH AIRBAG AND BELT TENSIONER . Observe the safety regulations for handling airbag units!
When mounting the driver airbag unit, use new fastening screws.
Tightening torque: 10 Nm. (7.5 ftlb.)
  Connect battery ground cable and perform the work made necessary by disconnection of the battery.
 
Check the operation of all electrical loads and control lamps.
 
Calibrate the steering angle sensor on vehicles with PSM.
 
With the PST 2 read out the fault memory of all control modules.
