Removing Steering Column

STEERING COLUMN REMOVING INSTRUCTIONS (1 OF 3)

No. Procedure Instructions
  Disconnect battery ground cable For vehicles with M 536 (alarm siren with tilt sensor) disconnect the battery with the ignition on (all loads must be switched off beforehand)!
 
This must be observed, otherwise the alarm siren will be set off (installation location to the right next to the battery)!
  Remove driver's airbag unit Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVER'S AIRBAG UNIT .
 
Refer to SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR VEHICLES WITH AIRBAG AND BELT TENSIONER . Observe the safety regulations for handling airbag units.
1 Remove the steering wheel Loosen hexagon nut -arrow- (1)
2 Detach the instrument cluster (instrument mount) from the dashboard insert and remove it. Release the instrument cluster fastening screws (2) and lift the instrument mount on the left and right and unclip them from the clips. Make sure that the leather from the instrument panel is not damaged! -right arrow-left arrow-left arrow-A-arrow A-B-arrow B- (1)
 
The 2 fastening screws are behind the hazard warning light switch -right arrow-left arrow - left arrow-A-arrow A-B-arrow B- (1)
3 Disconnect the electrical plug connection and remove instrument cluster (instrument mount) On the back of the instrument mount, unlock and pull out the connector (electrical plug connections) -arrows- (1)
4 Install the steering column switch cover and airbag contact unit Undo and remove the trim elements-arrows-A- (1)
5 Remove steering column switch and steering-column cover. To remove, loosen the clamp of the steering column switch from below. Disconnect the electrical plug connections -A and B-C- see (1)

STEERING COLUMN REMOVING PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS (2 OF 3)

6 Remove the left side nozzle Pull the control button -1-5-in the direction of the arrow-1-2-3-4-5- see (1)
7 Undo the holder from the steering lock and pull off the cover (collar) from the steering lock Undo the holder from the steering lock -arrow-arrow- see (1)
8 Remove the steering lock fastening screw Remove the steering lock fastening screw.
8a On Tiptronic vehicles, remove (disengage) the keylock cable on the steering lock Bring the gear-shift lever (selector lever) into position P and ignition lock into position 1. See (1)
 
Lift the retaining clip of the keylock cable slightly -arrow-arrow- (1)
9 Unlock the steering lock and move it out of the steering column Unlock steering lock in the ignition key position 1 on the steering column see (1)

STEERING COLUMN REMOVING PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS (3 OF 3)

  Remove the clutch pedal for manual transmission vehicles Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE CLUTCH PEDAL .
10 Undo the steering column clamp mount in the area of the brake pedal.
 
To do this, loosen the brake pedal bearing axle only slightly
Loosen the lock nut -arrow-using a suitable tool-V- (1)
11 Pull off steering angle sensor plug -B-arrow-C-
  • Pull at the connector housing only! Never pull the electrical connections!
Disengage cable guide -B-arrow-C- (1)
12 Remove the holder on the steering column and undo the upper steering column Undo the holder on the steering column -arrow-arrow- (1)
13 Remove the steering column with the steering shaft (1)
 
V1 = variant without PSM
 
V2 = variant with PSM
Remove the steering column carefully.
 
The steering shaft is loosened from the lower steering shaft section on both variants (V1 and V2) on the sliding piece -arrow- (1)
13a Undo the steering shaft on the steering gear and remove it.
 
This process is only necessary when replacing the steering column!

  • The lower steering shaft must be replaced completely when replacing the steering column, as the sliding piece and the toothing are paired with each other on the steering shaft for reasons of tolerance.
Undo the hexagon-head bolt -arrow-arrow- (1)
