Replacing Triggering Unit For Airbag

→ Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
→ Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.
→ Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least → Nominal value: 40 A to the vehicle battery.
Information
The PIWIS Tester II 9818 instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.
The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear in PIWIS Tester II 9818 .
- Connect the PIWIS Tester to the vehicle and start the PIWIS Tester. Switch on ignition.
- Select the vehicle type and start the diagnostic application.
- When the overview is displayed, start the control unit search by pressing [F12].
- Once the control unit search is complete, press [F7].
- Select Maintenance of vehicle order and press [F12].
- Compare the displayed values with the vehicle values and press [F8] to save, then press [F12].WARNING: Incorrect handling of airbag units
- Triggering of airbag unit.
- System faults can occur.
→ Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).
→ A power supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
→ Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
→ Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
→ Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
→ Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
→ Replace damaged parts during removal.
→ Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.
→ Do not position anything on the airbag units.
→ If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.
→ Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
→ Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
→ Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
→ Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
→ Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.
- Switch off ignition, remove the battery charger from the power feed and disconnect the battery.

Information
To prevent a malfunction of the airbag system, always check that the vehicle data is correct before locking the airbag control unit. The vehicle data can no longer be corrected after locking the airbag control unit.
- Select the Airbag control unit in the overview and press [F12].
- Select Maintenance/repairs and Lock and press [F12].
- Read the warnings on the Tester.
- Press [F8] to start programming and follow the instructions on the Tester.
- Read out the fault memory and erase it if necessary.
- Switch the ignition off and then on again. The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster comes on and must go off again after a few seconds.
