Checking fuel pump capacity

WARNING: The check involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must be observed in connection with the work:
  • Work only in a well-ventilated area! If approved equipment for the extraction of fuel vapor is available then make sure it is used.
  • Wear suitable gloves! Prolonged contact with fuel can cause skin irritation.
  • Keep a class BE fire extinguisher close by! Be mindful of the danger of sparks caused by short circuits and when connecting and disconnecting leads in electrical circuits.
  • Smoking is strictly forbidden.

  2. Remove the fuel pump fuse no. 32 while the engine is running. Turn off the ignition once the engine has stopped.

Refit fuel pump fuse no. 32.

  3. Detach the return line from the fuel rail. Use tool no. 83 95 261. Use a pair of flat-nose pliers to remove the rubber seal on the quick-release coupling.
IMPORTANT: In all work involving disconnection of the fuel line's quick-release couplings, great care must be taken to avoid damaging the sealing surface of the male coupling half. If the male coupling half is extremely dirty it should be cleaned before disconnection. Also clean the sealing surface after disconnection, if necessary. Use a soft cloth. Lubricate the male coupling half before fitting.
  4. Connect the adapter and hose, part no. 83 94 918, to the fuel rail return. Run the hose to a receptacle.

  5. Connect the diagnostic tool and use it to run the fuel pump for 30 sec.

After running for 30 sec, the pump should deliver at least 700 ml fuel to the receptacle.

  6. Remove the adapter and hose from the fuel rail return.
  7. Connect the return line to the fuel rail, lubricating the male part with acid-free vaseline, part no. 30 06 665, before connecting it.
