Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See AIR BAG (INFLATOR) MODULE  and STEERING WHEEL.
  2. Remove upper column shroud, lock cylinder bezel and lower column shroud. See Figure. Pull left and right side panels outward at bottom to disconnect velcro, then pull outward at top to disengage 2 snaps. Remove console center trim plate by pulling outward at bottom to disengage 4 lower fasteners, then pull outward at top to disengage 4 upper fasteners.
  3. Remove 2 screws from top of instrument panel upper trim panel (screws are hidden under 2 caps). Lift upper trim panel to disengage 6 clips along edge closest to you. Complete removal of upper trim panel by sliding/pulling it out of 3 clips near windshield.
  4. Remove 4 screws from top of instrument cluster trim panel. Disengage instrument cluster trim panel from retainers. Disconnect electrical connectors from rear window defogger switch and instrument panel dimmer switch. Remove instrument cluster trim panel.
  5. Protect the right front side of the console to prevent it from being damaged/scratched when removing lower instrument panel/steering column panel. Remove panel. Remove the SIR coil assembly. See SIR COIL ASSEMBLY .
  6. Disconnect lever control switch connectors. Remove lever control switch (if necessary). See LEVER CONTROL SWITCH ASSEMBLY . Disconnect ignition switch connector. Remove ignition switch (if necessary). See IGNITION SWITCH . Remove upper pinch bolt from intermediate shaft. Remove column mounting bolts. Remove steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure.
