Fuel System Pressure Test

CAUTION: Begin fuel system trouble shooting and diagnosis with checking fuel injection system pressure. High fuel pressure may be present in fuel lines and component parts. Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel system components.
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged when performing test.
  1. Remove air induction tube. Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF  . Install fuel pressure gauge and bleed off any fuel in system into a container. Close fuel pressure gauge shut-off valve.
  2. Turn ignition on with engine off. Record maximum fuel pressure. Cycle ignition on and off several times to establish an accurate reading. Allow pressure to stabilize for about 30 seconds. Fuel pressure reading should be 40-55 psi (2.7-3.8 kg/cm2 ).
  3. Bleed fuel pressure and repeat test for at least 2 more times. If during test fuel pressure drops 6-8 psi (.42-.56 kg/cm2 ), install Fuel Rail Return Plug (SA9410E).
  4. Turn ignition on with engine off. Record maximum fuel pressure. Cycle ignition on and off several times. Allow pressure to stabilize for about 30 seconds. If fuel pressure remains stable, replace fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure bleeds off 6-8 psi (.42-.56 kg/cm2 ), check fuel inlet line for leaks, check for leaking injector or check for faulty fuel pump.
