Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid on and off. If solenoid clicks when commanded on, go to step  6. If solenoid does not click when commanded on and off, go to next step.
  3. Check ENG CNTL 3 fuse located in underhood fuse block. Replace fuse as necessary. Disconnect EVAP vent solenoid harness connector. Connect a test light between solenoid harness 2-pin connector terminals. Using scan tool, command EVAP vent solenoid on. If test light turns on, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace EVAP purge solenoid. If test light does not turn on, go to next step.
  4. Connect test light between ground and EVAP vent solenoid harness connector terminal "A" (Orange wire). If test light does not illuminate, repair open in Orange wire to underhood fuse block. If test light illuminates, go to next step.
  5. Check for open in circuit between EVAP vent solenoid harness connector terminal "B" (White wire) and ECM. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace ECM.
  6. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel tank in-line connector. Using a DVOM, check voltage on in-line connector White wire. If 2-4 volts are present, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If 2-4 volts are not present, replace ECM.
