DTC C0161: Abs/TCS Brake Switch Circuit Malfunction
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, monitor DTC C0161. If scan tool indicates FAIL HIGH, go to next step. If scan tool indicates FAIL LOW, go to step 5.
- Using scan tool, monitor brakelight switch status while cycling switch. If scan tool indicates correct brake status, problem is intermittent. If scan tool does not indicate correct brake status, go to next step.
- Disconnect brakelight switch harness connector. Using a jumper wire, connect and disconnect jumper wire between brakelight switch harness connector terminals. Observe scan tool. If scan tool indicates correct brakelight switch status, replace brakelight switch. If scan tool does not indicate correct brakelight switch status, go to next step.
- Check for short to voltage in circuit No. 20 (Light Blue wire) between left instrument panel fuse block and brakelight switch. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace EBTCM.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, monitor brakelight switch status while cycling switch. If scan tool indicates correct brake switch status, problem is intermittent. If scan tool does not indicate correct brake switch status, go to next step.
- Check BRAKE/PARK/LOCK fuse (15-amp), located in underhood fuse block. Replace and retest as necessary. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect brakelight switch harness connector. Using a jumper wire, connect and reconnect jumper wire at brakelight switch harness connector terminals. Observe scan tool. If scan tool does not indicate correct brake switch status, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate correct brake switch status, check for terminal tightness. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace brakelight switch.
- Using a DVOM, check voltage on brakelight switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (Orange wire). If ignition voltage is present, go to next step. If ignition voltage is not present, repair open in circuit to underhood fuse block.
- Check for open or terminal tightness in circuit No. 20 (Light Blue wire) between left instrument panel fuse block and switch harness connector. Repair as necessary. If circuit or terminals are okay, replace EBTCM.
