Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Start and operate engine at 3000 RPM. Using scan tool, command EGR solenoid on and off 3 times (0-100 percent duty cycle). Allow engine to return to idle with EGR solenoid commanded off. If EGR sensor voltage is greater than 1.0 volt, go to next step. If EGR sensor voltage is not greater than 1.0 volt, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Turn engine off. Disconnect EGR valve harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. If EGR sensor voltage is less than 0.2 volt, go to next step. If EGR sensor voltage is not less than 0.2 volt, check EGR valve harness connector terminal "C" (Brown wire) for short to voltage or short to harness connector terminal "D" (Gray wire) circuit.
  3. Check voltage between EGR valve harness connector terminals "B" (Black wire) and "D" (Gray wire). If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, check for terminal tightness. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace EGR valve. If voltage reading is not 4-6 volts, check for open in circuit (Black wire) or for terminal tightness. Repair as necessary. If circuit or terminals are okay, replace PCM.
