Procedure For Towing On All Four Wheels

NOTE: If it is necessary to remove transmission fluid from transaxle in order to achieve desired level for four-wheel towing, it will not be necessary to add transaxle fluid when not towing vehicle. This is provided so transmission fluid level falls in cross-hatched area when checked at proper temperature.
  1. Start engine and operate vehicle for 15 miles, 15 minutes or until a normal transaxle operating temperature of 190-200°F (88-93°C) is reached. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake. Move gear selector through all gear positions, ending in Park. Let vehicle idle for 3 minutes with accessories off.
  2. With the engine running, pull out dipstick and wipe it off with a clean rag or paper towel. Push dipstick back in all the way, and then immediately pull it back out. Check both sides of dipstick, and read the lower level. Transmission fluid level must be in cross-hatched area. See Figure . There may be some spatters of transmission fluid on dipstick above transmission fluid level. This is normal.
  3. Check both sides of dipstick and read lower transmission fluid level. For four wheel towing, transmission fluid level must be in cross-hatched area, below line in illustration labeled "MAX HOT FOR 4-WHEEL TOWING." See Figure . (It is normal if there are some splatters of transmission fluid on dipstick, above transmission fluid fill level.)
  4. If transmission fluid level is in cross-hatched area on dipstick, push dipstick back in all the way. There is no need to add or remove any transmission fluid to automatic transaxle. If transmission fluid level is below the "ADD" mark, then add only enough Saturn Transaxle Fluid to bring transmission fluid level up into cross-hatched area. If transmission fluid level is above the "FULL" mark, remove enough transmission fluid to bring fluid level into cross-hatched area.
