End Cover: Installation

NOTE: Clean and lubricate fasteners with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid.
  1. Clean gasket surfaces and install gasket onto end cover dowel pins. Install the end cover to transaxle case. Insert input and output shaft tubes into the ends of the shafts and install cover. If cover does not seat, rotate axle to help align the tubes with the bushings in the shafts. See Figure .
  2. Install the end cover-to-case bolts and tighten in crisscross pattern to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install bolt into brake line bracket and tighten to specification. Raise powertrain up and install transaxle mount.
  3. Install 2 lower mount-to-traps axle fasteners and tighten to specification. Tighten 2 frame-to-body bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower powertrain completely.
  4. NOTE: Make sure that the lower mount stud inserts in frame accurately, without damaging stud threads.
  5. Install transaxle lower mount-to-frame fastener and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install left wheelhouse splash shield. Clean and lubricate ball joint threads.
  6. CAUTION: Take care not to tear rubber boot when installing ball joint to knuckle. Before installing wheels remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel lug nuts to loosen in service.
  7. Position ball joint into steering knuckle. Install nut to lower ball joint and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 N.m). If necessary, after torquing, tighten nut additionally to align slot in nut with cotter pin hole in ball joint, and install cotter pin and bend ends.
  8. Position wheel onto hub. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower vehicle from hoist and fill transaxle with appropriate fluid. See LUBRICATION  .
  9. Install transaxle strut-to-midrail bracket fastener and tighten to specification. See Fig 1 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install air cleaner and duct assembly. See AIR CLEANER & DUCT ASSEMBLY  . Verify proper fluid level.
