Steering Gear Boot: Removal

WARNING: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on the hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Loosen outer tie rod-to-inner tie rod jam nut.
  4. Remove tie rod end-to-knuckle nut and discard.

    CAUTION: Do not attempt to separate joint using a wedge-type tool because seal may be damaged.
  5. Using Tie Rod Separator SA91100C (or equivalent), separate tie rod end from steering knuckle.
  6. Unthread outer tie rod from inner tie rod and remove from vehicle.
  7. Remove inner tie rod to outer tie rod jam nut.

  9. Remove boot clamp on tie rod end.
  10. Remove boot clamp on steering gear housing end with cutters and discard.
  11. Remove steering gear boot from steering gear.
