Diagnostic System Check - Engine Electrical

  1. Perform battery inspection/test. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION under ON-VEHICLE TESTING in appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS - SATURN "L" SERIES article in ELECTRICAL. If battery passes test, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, with engine off. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Attempt to establish communication with body control module (BCM) and engine control module (ECM). If scan tool communicates with both control modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with both control modules, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Select BCM and ECM display DTCs function on scan tool. Record all displayed DTCs, DTC status, and module which set DTC. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, go to SYSTEM TESTS  .
  5. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with a "U", see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1000 or B1001, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & ELECTRICAL. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000 or B1001, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS - SATURN "L" SERIES article in CHARGING SYSTEM in ELECTRICAL.
