Diagnostic Procedures

NOTE: DO NOT perform this diagnostic if no driveability condition exists, unless directed from another procedure. Search for applicable service bulletins before proceeding with diagnosis. DO NOT clear DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure. If there is a condition with the starting system, diagnose starter system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure battery cables are clean and tight. Ensure control module grounds are clean, tight, and in the proper location.
  1. Install scan tool. Does the scan tool power-up? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP IN DATA LINK COMMUNICATIONS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Attempt to establish communication with the control module. Does the scan tool communicate with control module? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE IN DATA LINK COMMUNICATIONS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Attempt to start engine. Does the engine start and idle? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to NO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L SATURN "L" SERIES article.
  4. Select the DTC Information on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any powertrain DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  5. With scan tool, save or capture the Powertrain DTC Information, Store Information. After repairs, go to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool display DTC P0602? If yes, go to DTC P0601-P0607, P1600, P1621, P1627, P1680, P1681, P1683 OR P2610: PCM MEMORY  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  7. Is the customer's concern regarding the automatic transmission? If yes, go to appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If no, go to next step.
  8. Is the customer's concern regarding the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing? If yes, go to INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE SYSTEM CHECK  under DRIVE CYCLES. If no, go to next step.
  9. Perform the following symptoms:
    • Hard start surges/chuggles.
    • Lack of power.
    • Sluggishness or sponginess.
    • Detonation/spark knock hesitation.
    • Sag, stumble cuts out, or misses.
    • Poor fuel economy.
    • Poor fuel fill quality.
    • Rough, unstable, or incorrect idle.
    • Stalling, dieseling/runs-on.
    • Backfire.
    • MIL inoperative. For repairs, see MIL INOPERATIVE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
    • MIL always on. For repairs, see MIL ALWAYS ON  under SYSTEM TESTS.

    Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, system is okay. If no, problem is intermittent. Refer to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L SATURN "L" SERIES article.
