Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul

1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
2. Using a Torx socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 Torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

3. Disconnect the horn connector.

4. Remove the horn button assy from the steering wheel assy and support the horn button assy with one hand as shown in the illustration.
   NOTE: When removing the horn button assy, do not pull the airbag wire harness.
5. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the horn button assy connectors.
6. Remove the horn button assy.

   CAUTION:

   • When storing the horn button assy, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
   • Never disassemble the horn button assy.

1. Disconnect the connector.
2. Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and main shaft assy.
4. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assy.

   SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

1. Remove the 3 screws and the steering column cover LWR.

2. Remove the 2 bolts and the steering column cover UPR.

1. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.

1. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assy.

1. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assy.

1. Remove the clip and the steering column hole cover plate.

1. Put matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft assy.
2. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assy.

1. Put matchmarks on the main shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft assy.
2. Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft assy.

1. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assy.
2. Remove the bolt and steering column assy.

1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered head bolts.
2. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolt heads.
3. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/switch bracket assy.

Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the steering main shaft bush.

1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the upper side.

2. Using an extension bar and hammer, remove the steering main shaft assy.

3. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the lower side.

1. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assy in the ACC position.
2. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assy.

1. Disconnect the unlock warning switch assy connector from the ignition or starter switch assy.
2. Remove the unlock warning switch assy.

1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assy from the steering column bracket assy.

1. Install the ignition or starter switch assy to the steering column bracket assy with the 2 screws.

1. Install the unlock warning switch assy.
2. Connect the unlock warning switch assy connector to the ignition or starter switch assy.

3. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch assy to the steering column bracket assy UPR as shown in the illustration.
   NOTE: When fixing the wire harness, do not tighten the camp too hard. It could damage the wire harness inside.

1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assy is in the ACC position.
2. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.

1. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
2. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.

1. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the lower side.
2. Install the steering main shaft assy.

3. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the upper side.

1. Coat a new steering main shaft bush with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
2. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the steering main shaft bush.

   SST 09612-2201 1

1. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket assy and steering column clamp upper with 2 new steering lock set bolts.
2. Tighten the 2 steering lock set bolts until the bolt heads break off.

1. Install the steering column assy from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement assy.
2. Install the steering column assy with the bolt.

   Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

3. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.

1. Align the matchmarks on the main shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft assy.
2. Install the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.

   Torque: 28 N.m (286 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf) 

   NOTE: Install the intermediate shaft assy with the distinction paint facing the steering column assy side.

1. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft assy.
2. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.

   Torque: 28 N.m (286 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf)

1. Install the steering column hole cover plate with the clip.

1. Install the windshield wiper switch assy and connect the connector.

1. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assy and connect the connector.

1. With the key in the ACC position, connect the floor shift parking lock cable.

1. Install the steering column cover UPR.
2. Install the 2 bolts.

   Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)

3. Install the steering column cover LWR with the 3 screws.

1. Align the matchmarks with the one on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
2. Install the steering wheel assy with the set nut.

   Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) 

3. Connect the connector.
