Inspection Procedure
- CHECK OPERATION OF STOP LAMP
- Check whether the stop lamps turn on and off normally when the brake pedal is depressed and released.
OK: Stop lamps turn ON when brake pedal is depressed.
- NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH CIRCUIT
- OK: Go to next step.
- READ VALUE USING HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL (STP SIGNAL AND ST1- VOLTAGE)
- Connect a hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the tester or scan tool ON.
- On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STOP LIGHT SW.
- Read the value displayed on the tester.
- If using an OBD II scan tool, refer to the instruction manual .
Standard:
STP SIGNAL AND ST1- VOLTAGEBrake Pedal Operations Specified Conditions Depressed STP Signal ON Released STP Signal OFF
- OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )
- NG: Go to next step
- INSPECT STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY
- Check the resistance when the stop lamp switch is ON and OFF.
Standard:
STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSYSwitch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions ON (Free) 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω OFF (Pushed in) 1 - 2 10 kΩ or higher
- NG: REPLACE STOP LAMP SWITCH ASSY
- OK: Go to next step.
- Check the resistance when the stop lamp switch is ON and OFF.
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STOP LAMP SWITCH - ECM)
- Disconnect the S8 stop lamp switch connector.
- Disconnect the E4 ECM connector.
- Check the resistance.
Standard (Check for open):
STOP LAMP SWITCH - ECM (CHECK FOR OPEN)Tester Connections Specified Conditions Stop lamp switch (S8-1) - STP (E4-19) Below 1 Ω Standard (Check for short):

- Reconnect the stop lamp switch connector.
- Reconnect the ECM connector.
- NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
- OK: REPLACE ECM (See REPLACEMENT )
