Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul

1. Disconnect the connector.
2. Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and main shaft assy.
4. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assy.

   SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

1. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover LWR.

2. Remove the 2 bolts and steering column cover UPR.

1. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.

1. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assy.

1. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assy.

1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft.
2. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assy.

1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and main shaft assy.
2. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft assy.

1. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assy.
2. Remove the bolt and steering column assy.

1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
2. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
3. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/switch bracket assy.

1. Using a screw driver, remove the steering main shaft bush from the steering column assy.

1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).

2. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft assy and steering main shaft bearing.
   NOTE: Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft assy.

3. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).

1. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assy in the ACC position.
2. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assy.

1. Disconnect the unlock warning switch assy connector from the ignition or starter switch assy.
2. Remove the unlock warning switch assy.

1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assy from the steering column bracket assy.

1. Install the ignition or starter switch assy to the steering column bracket assy with the 2 screws.

1. Install the unlock warning switch assy.
2. Connect the unlock warning switch assy connector to the ignition or starter switch assy.

3. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch assy to the steering column bracket assy UPR as shown in Fig 15.

1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assy is in the ACC position.
2. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.

1. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when removing the key.
2. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when inserting the key and turning it to the ACC position.

1. Check the condition of the steering column tube bearing rotation and check for abnormal noise. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the steering column assy.

1. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft assy.
2. Install the steering main shaft assy to the steering column tube.

3. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft assy.

1. Using SST and a hammer, install a new steering main shaft bearing.

   SST 09612-22011

1. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket assy and steering column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
2. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

1. Insert the steering column assy from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement assy.
2. Install the steering column assy with the bolt.

   Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

3. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.

1. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft assy and main shaft assy.
2. Install the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.

Torque: 28 N.m (286 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf)

1. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft.
2. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.

   Torque: 28 N.m (286 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf)

1. Install the windshield wiper switch assy and connect the connector.

1. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assy and connect the connector.

1. Install the steering column cover UPR with the 2 bolts.

   Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)

2. Install the steering column cover LWR with the 3 screws.

1. Align the matchmark with the one on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
2. Install the steering wheel assy with the set nut.

   Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) 

3. Connect the connector.
