Steering Column Assembly: Removal
- PRECAUTION
- Refer to precaution (see DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM ).
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
HINT:
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
- Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
- Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
- Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
- Remove the 2 screws, steering column cover lower and steering column cover upper.
HINT:
- Tilt the steering column assembly to the lowermost position when removing the steering column upper cover.
- Tilt it to the uppermost position when removing the steering column lower cover.
- Remove the 2 screws, steering column cover lower and steering column cover upper.
- REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- TEST DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
- REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET
- Fold back the floor carpet, and remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.
- DISCONNECT STEERING NO. 2 INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Put matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft and the intermediate shaft.
- Remove bolt and disconnect the No. 2 intermediate shaft from the intermediate shaft.

- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column.
- Remove the 3 bolts and steering column.
