Inspection Procedure

HINT:

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER RELAY) 
    1. Connect to a Techstream the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active test / Activate the Starter Relay.
    5. Select the following monitor item: Starter Signal.
    6. Read the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      OK 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITION AND STARTER SIGNAL REFERENCE

      Ignition Switch Position Starter Signal
      ON OFF
      START ON

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Result Proceed to
      Within standard range A
      Outside standard range B

    B: Go to step 2 

    A : CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  )

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch (for automatic transaxle models).
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
      2. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
      3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
      4. Turn the tester ON.
      5. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.
      6. Read the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

        Result 

        RESULT REFERENCE

        Starter Signal Proceed to
        ON A
        OFF B

      7. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Inspect the clutch start switch circuit (for manual transaxle models).
      1. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
      2. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
      3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
      4. Turn the tester ON.
      5. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.
      6. Read the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

        Result 

        RESULT REFERENCE

        Starter Signal Proceed to
        ON A
        OFF B

      7. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.

    B:  Go to step  4

    A: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (STA TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    2. Disconnect the clutch start switch or Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Result 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition Proceed to
      A20-48 (STA) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V A
      Below 1.5 V B
    5. Reconnect the clutch start switch or park/neutral position switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    B : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL  )

    A : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - CLUTCH START SWITCH OR PNP SWITCH - ST RELAY) 

  4. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH OR PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the clutch start switch circuit (for manual transaxle models).
      1. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard resistance 

        RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        Tester Connection Switch Position Specified Condition
        1 - 2 OFF (free) 10 kΩ or higher
      3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.

        Result 

        RESULT REFERENCE

        Result Proceed to
        Within standard range A
        Outside standard range B

    2. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch (for automatic transaxle models).
      1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
      2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Standard resistance 

        RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

        4 - 5 Except P, N 10 kΩ or higher
        2 - 5 P 10 kΩ or higher

      3. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

        Result 

        RESULT REFERENCE

        Result Proceed to
        Within standard range A
        Outside standard range 4 - 5 B
        Outside standard range 2 - 5 C

    B : REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH OR PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH AND GO TO STEP 5  (See REMOVAL )

    C : REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )

    A: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH 
    1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      4 (AM1) - 7 (ST2) ON position 10 kΩ or higher
      5 (AM2) - 7 (ST2)
    3. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )

    OK : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH START SWITCH - IGNITION SWITCH AND ECM)
