Steering Column Assembly: Removal

CAUTION: Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column (See PRECAUTION ).
  1. TURN FRONT WHEELS TO FACE STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD  (See REMOVAL )
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully extend and tilt up the steering wheel.
    2. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    3. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft.
    4. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable.

    5. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951 -05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) 

      NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (center bolt) before use.

  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    NOTE: Removing the steering column cover in the incorrect order will cause the steering column cover to break.
    1. Push the right and left sides of the lower steering column cover, and disengage the 4 claws.

    2. Insert fingers into the opening of the tilt lever of the lower steering column cover to disengage the claw.

      HINT:

      Spread the claw to disengage it.

    3. Turn the lower steering column cover to disengage the 2 claws and remove the lower steering column cover as shown in the illustration.

    4. Disengage the claw and the 2 pins, and remove the upper steering column cover.
  6. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.

    2. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  7. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    (See REMOVAL )

  8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH LOWER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB REINFORCEMENT  (See REMOVAL )

  10. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET 
    1. Turn back the floor carpet, and remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.

  11. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt.
      NOTE: Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft.

    2. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering intermediate shaft.
    3. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft.

  12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Separate the wire harness clamp from the power steering ECU assembly.
    2. Disconnect the connector from the power steering ECU assembly.

      HINT:

      As shown in the illustration, pull out the lock of the lock lever and turn the lock lever to disconnect the connector.

    3. Disconnect the connector from the power steering ECU assembly.
    4. Disconnect the connectors and disengage the wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.

    5. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and steering column assembly.
      NOTE: Do not drop or strike the steering column assembly. If dropped or struck, replace it with a new one.

  13. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt.

    2. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column assembly.
    3. Remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.
