Steering Column: Inspection

  1. Ensure "U" joint has no play. Flex "U" joint and check for binding.
  2. Replace "U" joint if torque required to turn exceeds 4 INCH lbs. (.58 N.m). Check plastic washer for damage, and serration for wear.
  3. Check steering shaft length. On all except XT/XT6 and Justy, non-tilt column shaft length should be 20.32-20.40" (516.2-518.2 mm).
  4. On all except XT/XT6 and Justy, tilt column shaft length should be 11.67" (296.5 mm). On XT/XT6, shaft length should be 29.55-29.63" (750.1-752.1 mm). On Justy, shaft length should be 22.76-22.84" (578.2-580.2 mm).
  5. Check shaft runout. Runout for elliptical part should be less than 1.28" (32.5 mm). Runout for upper end of shaft should be less than .047" (1.2 mm).
  6. Runout for shaft collar (standard wheel) should be less than .024" (.60 mm). Replace steering shaft if not within specifications. Check bearings for damage. Replace any worn bearings.
