Fuel Tank (Legacy): Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  under FUEL SYSTEM.
  2. Remove fuel filler cap and drain fuel from fuel tank.
  3. NOTE: This step applies to 4WD models only.
  4. Remove muffler, rear suspension crossmember and rear differential.
  5. Remove clamp and disconnect fuel filler hose from fuel filler pipe. See Fig 1 .
  6. Remove clamp and disconnect air vent from fuel filler pipe.
  7. Loosen clips and disconnect air breather hoses and evaporation hose from pipes.
  8. Loosen clips and clamp, and disconnect delivery hose, return hose and evaporation hose from pipes. See Fig 2 .
  9. While holding fuel tank, remove bolts from bands and dismount fuel tank. See Fig 4 .
  10. CAUTION: Two persons are necessary to perform the tank removal/installation process.
    NOTE: On 4WD models, also disconnect harness connector from fuel meter unit. See Fig 3 .
    NOTE: Have a helper support the fuel tank when disconnecting the harness.
  11. Disconnect the harness connector from the fuel pump assembly.
