Code 12: Starter Switch

NOTE: Refer to illustration for ECU connector and terminal identification. See Figure .
  1. If starter motor does not operate, repair as necessary. If starter motor operates, check ECU input signal by measuring voltage between ECU connector E29, terminal No. 12 and ground. If voltage is 13-14 volts, repair ECU connector or replace ECU. If voltage is not 13-14 volts, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECU and starter motor connectors. Use an ohmmeter and measure resistance between ECU connector E29, terminal No. 12 and starter motor terminal No. 1. Zero ohms should be present. Measure resistance between starter motor connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. Minimum of one megohm should be present.
  3. If resistances are to specification, check neutral position switch (M/T) or inhibitor switch (A/T). See I - SYS/COMP TESTS article. If resistances are not to specification, repair or replace harness, connector, or terminals.
