Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes

NOTE: Subaru Select Monitor (SSM) or an OBD-II generic scan tool must be used to perform self-diagnostic tests. Follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions for proper operation. Communication with vehicle's on-board computer is through the OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC). See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Diagnostic test mode connectors, located under the instrument panel, must be connected for some diagnostic tests. See Fig 3 and Fig 4 .

Connect scan tool to 16-pin DLC located on lower left side of instrument panel. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and freeze frame data, following scan tool manufacturer's instructions. Scan tool functions consist of:
